Perforating and creasing (scoring) are core post-press fabrication steps that define the physical geometry of offset-printed folding cartons, securing clean folds and preventing paper fibers from cracking.

1. Perforation Techniques and Industrial Applications

Perforation (also known as tear-strip line punching) is the process of cutting a series of micro-slits or holes in a straight line without fully separating the paperboard elements:

  • Working Principle: The die-cutting plate uses a specialized steel rule with intermittent cutting teeth. When pressed onto the cardboard sheet, it creates aligned slit punctures, preserving just enough fiber connection to withstand shipping shocks.

  • Practical Applications: Perforated lines are extensively used in e-commerce shipping boxes (tear-strip mailers for easy tool-free opening) and retail shelf-ready packaging (SRPs, where warehouse workers tear along the perforation to turn shipping cases into display trays).

2. Precision Creasing (Scoring) and Preventing Fiber Cracking

Creasing is the mechanical application of localized compression force to produce structured creases (indentations) along folding axes:

  • Strict Process Tolerances: The creasing matrix height and pressure must be calculated meticulously based on paperboard thickness and density (GSM). Insufficient pressure results in loose, crooked folds that distort box alignment. Excess pressure ruptures the cellulose fibers of the paperboard, causing edge cracking.

  • Preserving Offset Print Aesthetics: For premium offset-printed boxes finished with gloss or matte lamination, precise creasing prevents the plastic film from delaminating or tearing at the corners.
